Hurricane Rita Cleanup Project

These pics show the "before" and "after" from the back yard of the first house we went to. The large broken limbs that were hanging from the tree had to be pulled down before we could start. We hooked up to them with a cable and pulled them down with a tractor before we fired up the chainsaws and reduced them to small chunks to be hauled away.

This is a "Before and After" from the front yard of the first house we went to. We got this old oak trimed down to the trunk and then I started lopping off big pieces to be hauled away. Once I got down close to the base the stump turned itself right-side-up. It freaked me out when the thing started to move. Notice in the "After" shot that the stump settled almost flush with the ground.

This is a pic of me working over a big red oak that fell on the old man's shed and garage. At the point the picture was taken I had already lopped off 2/3 of the tree and was just working my way down the trunk. The aluminum shed was caving in so we had to brace-up the trunk close to the ground, and I had to stradle it and cut my way to the bottom. It was an awkward job, but we got it done without smashing his garage or the little shed.

Notice the new Stihl MS 270C. This little baby burned right through that hard oak. It was a world of difference compared to the Crapsman I had used the previous week. Me likey.

The top pic in this set shows the home owner. This old guy felt really bad that he couldn't help because of his bum knee. He used his walker to get around and chat with everyone.

The middle pic is of the old dude's neighbor. He had a HUGE oak fall through his house and another fall through his garage. He wasn't on our list of folks to help, but he helped us with the big pieces of trunk in trade for cutting up his downed trees. This pic gives you an idea of the size of trees we were dealing with. That oak is HARD wood.

The last pic just shows one of the many trash piles we made. I brought home a bunch of oak to burn in our fireplace.

This is what was left of another big oak after I worked it over with the Stihl.

Here are a couple of stumps from two other downed trees we removed from this property. Big trees.
